Amazing storyline, epic battles (both boss & street fights which you get to use Miles’ enhanced abilities), a wide range of spectacular suits to choose from including the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse suit which has a suit mod that allows you to ‘Vibe the Verse’ and alter Miles’ in-game frame rate movements to mimic the film’s frame rate and the Bam! Pow! Wham! Visor Mod which adds some comic based hit effects to the game. Not forgetting the stunning screenshots thanks to Insomniac Games’ awesome photo mode or the fire soundtrack of the game. Is Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales worth buying? Absolutely!!!
The game, story, gameplay
The game was released in late 2020 and is an action-adventure open world game. We play as the teenager Miles Morales who is finding his footing as a new Spider-Man and New York’s only Spider-Man (while Peter is away on ‘Vacation’). Players get to experience Miles’ adjusting to his new home in Harlem as a teenager when not in his Spidey suit at the same time learning to be Spidey while on the job.
We also see Miles discover his enhanced abilities, his Venom blast attacks (bio-electricity) and his camouflage ability which allows him to be invisible for a short period of time. It’s funny to hear what some of the enemies say when Miles uses his camouflage ability right in front of them. Or when they see some of their guys sent into the air when fighting them using this ability.
Although Peter Parker is away, we can see that he continues to mentor Miles Morales by setting up some training challenges for him spread across the map. Peter also does call to check up on Miles as you progress with the story. Miles also has help from his bestfriend Ganke, kinda like MCU Peter’s Ned, the man in the chair. Throughout the game, both Miles and Ganke have amusing chats. We also see Miles getting some help from his uncle Aaron Davis A.K.A. The Prowler. Insomniac Games takes an interesting approach to the relationship between Miles and his uncle in this game.
The melee combat is similar to the Marvel’s Spider-Man one which feels great just like the combat in Rocksteady’s Arkham series. The difference is that in the Spider-Man games there’s a touch of goofiness which is lovely. Another thing that’s amusing about the game is Miles’ quips & one-liners and John Jonah Jameson’s “Menace! A feckless, treacherous, unhinged menace!” line😂😂.
The suits
Just like in Insomniac’s Marvel’s Spider-Man, there are a number of Spidey suits Miles can choose from, though not as many in the first game. Most of them are interesting like the Bodega Cat Suit which has Miles wearing his bagpack with Teo’s cat (also called Spider-Man) in there accompanying him on mission’s. It does have a unique finisher where both Miles and the cat delivering a blow to the enemy. Or the Programmable Matter Suit with the gloves & boots and outlines of the eye lenses glowing bright red. The Programmable Matter Suit has a unique finisher where Miles uses the suit’s mechanical limbs similar to Iron Spider’s limbs. You can view all the suits in the game here.
The photo mode
Insomniac Games have done an incredible job with the photo mode in this game. From the various filters to choose from to the stickers. You also get a ton of options for editing the screenshot to ensure you get that captivating shot. It’s fun to play around with the filters, like the 8-bit one.
Enjoy some shots I was able to get from this incredible game.
Conclusion
The game is incredible to play even on the PS4, you do miss out on the graphics due to the limited capabilities of the PS4 and the haptic feedback of the DualSense for PS5. Also on the PS4, you may notice some few bugs/glitches but it won’t stop you from enjoying this masterpiece. You should definitely try as much as possible to experience Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales on the PS5 if you haven’t.
